The Counseling Center regularly conducts evaluation and accountability research to determine the effectiveness of counseling services and to improve both the quality and breadth of services. Data generated by research initiatives are used to advocate on behalf of students with both faculty and administrators. 

Listed below are some of the research activities and initiatives that members of the Counseling Center have had published or distributed to administrators and colleagues on campus.

National Depression Screening Survey (2006)

The Counseling Center continued its participation in National Depression Screening Day by administering an anonymous depression screening survey to 199 CAS, SBS, NESAD and LAW students in October. This report provides an overview of the combined results, as well as brief comparisons to data from the 2006 survey.

A.D.A.P.T. completed its 5th year of providing depression awareness and education programs on behalf of the Suffolk University community.

National Alcohol Screening Day (2005)

During the week prior to the 2005 Spring Break, the Suffolk University Counseling Center, Office of Diversity Services, Health Services, Office of Residence Life, Dean of Students, Campus Security, and the Psychology Department collaborated on a comprehensive effort to increase student awareness of the use and abuse of alcohol on campus. 202 students completed an anonymous Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) on alcohol-use patterns that was part of National Alcohol Screening Day on college campuses.

National Depression Screening Survey (2004)

On October 7, 2004, the Suffolk University Counseling Center participated in National Depression Screening Day. 120 students completed anonymous surveys as part of the depression awareness program. This report provides a composite analysis of students’ individual responses to the nationally-normed questionnaire.

The Suffolk University Student: Past, Present, and Future (1970-1998)

The introductory section of this article was published in 1980 by the Counseling Center in an effort to analyze whether any significant changes had occurred in full-time freshman students over the previous decade. The data collected was also combined with similar data provided by the Office of Enrollment Management on the freshman classes of 1990 and 1998.
