Teide Observatory: meeting celestial wonders in the dark of night
On September 28th, students enrolled in the Science-for-non-Science-Majors course "Astronomy II: Stars and Galaxies" (SCI 112) will travel to the Canary Islands to complete a four nights Astronomy Lab at the European Northern Observatory. The science/adventure field trip includes 40 hours of astronomical observations with the Mons Telescope, climbing the world’s third largest volcano (Mount Teide, 12,198 ft), exploring the Parque Nacional del Teide (named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 29th, 2007), and a visit to the world’s largest bush (Drago de Icod).
Primary targets for this observation run are star-forming regions in the Milky Way like the Orion and Hourglass nebulae, old globular clusters like M 4, galaxies like Andromeda and, of course, supernova hunting.
