Our Mission

The office of Student Activities and Service Learning contributes to the mission of the University by providing a variety of co-curricular programs, services and facilities that:

  • Promote student involvement and success
  • Nurture an ethic of service and citizenship
  • Recognize diversity as a core value of our community
  • Develop positive academic and social transitions for new students in the Suffolk community
  • Enrich the learning experience by providing challenging and supportive opportunities for personal growth and leadership development

Our Philosophy

The staff members in the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning are committed appreciation of diversity and developing the leadership potential of Suffolk students. When individual students become more effective leaders, our student organizations, and the educational experience for all students, is enriched and strengthened.

To accomplish our mission, the office of Student Activities and Service Learning:

  • Supports and advises the activities of nearly 75 student clubs and organizations
  • Plans and implements a series of leadership development programs
  • Coordinates involvement opportunities within the S.O.U.L.S. Community Service Center
  • Maintains and oversees facilities and programs within the Student Activities Center
  • Provides information and resources about involvement opportunities through an array of sources including Campus Calendars, Dateline and The Hub Information Center
  • Partners with a wide range of campus and community groups to enrich the student experience
  • Plans and implements many Suffolk University traditions and annual events

Lead and direct departmental initiatives that provide a comprehensive range of services including campus-wide programming, advising for over 50 clubs and organizations, community service learning initiatives, campus function space reservations, maintenance of student activities center operations, new student programs, and leadership development initiatives.  Supervise professional, support and graduate staff and maintain an administrative budget and serve as signatory for student budgets.  Serve as advisor to the Student Government Association, Finance Committee and Class Councils. Plan and coordinate Family Orientation.  Coordinate the annual honors Recognition Day celebrating academic excellence, Leadership Awards Banquet and chair Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities selection committee.

Dave DeAngelis, Director of Student Activities

Lead and direct departmental initiatives that provide a comprehensive range of services including campus-wide programming, advising for nearly 60 clubs and organizations, campus function space reservations, maintenance of student activities center operations, graduate student programming, leadership development initiatives, student media advising, production of departmental publications.  Supervise professional, support and graduate staff and maintain an administrative budget with signatory responsibility for office and student organization contracts. 

Carolina Garcia, Program Director of Service Learning

The Program Director of Service Learning is an integral member of the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning with primary responsibilities for designing, implementing and assessing a comprehensive community service program and developing service-learning initiatives.  The Director provides daily management of the S.O.U.L.S. Community Service Center, spearheads ongoing and short-term service projects, and provides campus leadership in promoting community service and service learning programs.  The Director is also responsible for the oversight of programmatic efforts of the Gender Issues Council.  In addition, the Director serves as an integral member of the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning as a Program Advisor to student organizations and supports departmental initiatives.

Kate Schuit, Associate Director of Student Activities

Administers the organization/club registration process. Serves as Staff Advisor and develops training/development experiences for Program Council. Provides commuter student outreach initiatives and resources in conjunction with Retention Services, Off Campus Housing and Commuter Student Association. Serves as co-adviser to the Commuter Student Association. Oversees thematic week initiatives such as Unity Week, Welcome Week, Welcome Back Week, Commuter Connections Weeks and Spring Week. Creates and maintains support systems for faculty and staff advisors as well as program advisors. Serves as integral member of Student Activities staff and supports departmental initiatives.

Beth Rosenbleet, Associate Director of New Student Programs

The Associate Director for New Student Programs has primary responsibility for implementing new student programs including first-year and transfer student orientation, opening week activities and Family Weekend.  Additional responsibility for coordinating new student programs including SU101: FYE Seminar, Freshmen Leadership and Involvement Programs, and the virtualFYE program.  Provides leadership in departmental retention efforts and serves as Program Advisor for academic student organizations.

 

Karen Jasinski, Assistant Director of New Student Programs

The Assistant Director for New Student Programs works closely with the Associate Director to implement new student programs including first-year and transfer student orientation, opening welcome week activities and Family Weekend.  Additional responsibility for coordinating new student programs including SU101: coordination of Sawyer School of Business SU 101 sections, curriculum training, instructional support meetings and teaching a section of the FYE course.  The Assistant Director also serves as a Program Advisor for various student organizations and oversees sophomore initiative programs.

Katherine Kirkland, MACC VISTA/Assistant Director of Service Learning

The MACC VISTA/Assistant Director of Service Learning is an integral member of the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning with primary responsibilities for assisting the design, implementation and assessment of a comprehensive community service program and developing service-learning initiatives.  The Assistant Director coordinates service-learning capacity building activities within the S.O.U.L.S. Community Service Center, such as strengthening community partner relationships, oversee service-learning teaching assistant program, and provide faculty consultations on service learning.  In addition, the Assistant Director serves as an integral member of the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning by providing mentorship and supports departmental community service and leadership development initiatives.

Kelly Furtado, Site Manager

Jumpstart Boston at Suffolk/Emerson

The Jumpstart Site Manager selects, trains, and supervises Suffolk University Jumpstart Corp. Members. Working out of the SOULS Community Service Center, the Jumpstart Site Manager collaborates with nearby headstart programs to create an environment of life-long learning for children.

Kim Daly, Office Coordinator for Student Activities

The Office Coordinator is responsible for providing high-quality office and program support to the Office of Student Activities.  This includes primary responsibility for providing day to day operations of the Student Activities Office, supervision and development of student assistants (approx. 30), and program support for student organization and departmental initiatives

Kristen Gleason, Business Manager

B.M., UMass Lowell

Primary responsibility for providing administrative maintenance to departmental and student organization budgets, and other assigned fiscal related services, and integrating these services consistent with the policies and regulations of the University.   Additional responsibilities include support for major departmental programs, including but not limited to New Student Orientation, Recognition Programs, Service Learning Initiatives, MBTA Pass Program and Family Weekend. 

 

Heather See, Graduate Fellow, Student Government and Communications

The Graduate Fellow, Student Government and Communications has primary responsibility for advising the Student Government Association (SGA) Public Relations Committee and the Student Judiciary Review Board, provide project support for SGA elections, Who’s Who selection committee, and the annual Leadership Awards Banquet.  In addition, the graduate fellow will coordinate office wide communications via the “Campus Cruiser” intranet, manage the online campus calendar of events, announcements, and oversee departmental master calendar.

 

Kevin Hoffman, Graduate Fellow, Commuter Student Outreach & Student Organizations


The Graduate Fellow, Commuter Student Outreach and Student Organizations has primary responsibility for the coordination of outreach efforts for our commuter student population, including publishing newsletters, coordinating Commuter Connections Week and co-advising the Commuter Student Association. The Graduate fellow will work with the Associate Director in the coordination of the student club/organization registration process for existing and new groups. He/She will assist in the assessment, evaluation and distribution of resources for Faculty and Staff Advisors.

Jessica Fortin, Graduate Fellow, New Student Programs

The Graduate Fellow for New Student Programs is an active member of the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning with primary responsibility for working with the SU101 FYE seminar.  Responsibilities include recruitment, selection and training of undergraduate peer mentors and coordination and promotion of the FYE speaker series.  In addition, the graduate fellow will assist with the planning and implementation of New Student Orientation and Family Weekend, and serve as Program Advisor for student organizations.

Laura Franze, Graduate Fellow, Programming

The Graduate Fellow, Programming is an active member of the Office of Student Activities and Service Learning.  The primary responsibilities are to co-advise and further the development of Program Council (PC) as well as other assigned student organizations through their activities and programming efforts. In addition, the Graduate Fellow works in conjunction with the Associate Director of Student Activities to promote community building and leadership development through large-scale programmatic efforts.

Emily Bourque, Graduate Fellow, Community Service and Service Learning

The Graduate Fellow for Community Service and Service Learning is an active member of the Student Activities Office and the Suffolk University Community Service Center. Responsibilities include recruitment and education of students regarding service opportunities, planning and implementation of campus wide service events, supervising the center’s work study staff, and other projects as needed.  The Graduate Fellow works in conjunction with the Director of Service Learning to promote community building through programmatic efforts, campus publications and interaction with students, faculty and staff.

Erica Jones, Graduate Fellow, Graduate Student Outreach and Leadership Programs


The Graduate Fellow, Operations and Leadership Programs is an active member of the Student Activities Office with primary responsibilities of assisting in the development and implementation of various leadership programs and operations of the Student Activities Center (SAC) and various event listings.  The Graduate Fellow works in conjunction with the Director of Student Activities and the entire Student Activities staff to promote community building and leadership development through programmatic efforts.


Student Activities Center Attendants, Mon.-Fri., 6-10pm

SAC Attendants are responsible for evening operations of the Student Activities Center after hours, including handling key and gaming equipment distribution as well as closing the center in the evening at 10:00 p.m. when the building closes and all club/organization office space is locked as necessary to ensure SAC utilization, safety and security.
