The Sawyer Business School At a Glance

Established in post-depression Boston in 1937, the Sawyer Business School has opened its doors to students near and far, rich and poor, over the years. Named after Boston entrepreneur Frank Sawyer, the school added a graduate program in 1948, New England’s first executive MBA program in 1978 and New England’s first Online MBA program in 1999.

Our students are enterprising individuals who come from all over the United States and the world. Here’s a look at some numbers:

  • 54% of our 1,594 undergraduate students are male, while 46% are female.
  • Nearly 70% of our undergraduates are Massachusetts residents, 20% are from overseas and 11% come from another state in the U.S.
  • On the graduate side, 89% are U.S. residents and 11% are from overseas countries.
  • 30% of our undergraduate students major in management, 18% in finance, 15% in accounting, 10% in international business and 9% in interdisciplinary studies.
  • Over 60% of graduate students are studying in our MBA program, while 20% are in public administration/health administration and 18% in finance.

Our exceptional faculty is one of the most important resources at the Business School. Their skills and experience provide our students with a rock-solid foundation to build their knowledge base.

  • We have 98 full-time faculty; and over 80 part-time faculty
  • Our faculty engage in research and are active participants in the business, health and public management communities. Some recent professional achievements of our faculty include:
  • Associate Professor of Finance, Lin Guo completed research on the regulatory oversight of the savings and loan industry. Her proposal was among 16 funded out of 160 submissions by the FDIC’s Center for Financial Research.
  • Professor of Management, Michael B. Arthur was recently awarded with the Everett Hughes Award from the Academy of Management Careers Division. This award recognizes Professor Arthur’s lifetime of exceptional research, scholarship and intellectual leadership in the field of careers.

Our Alumni consist of over 19,000 active alumni worldwide. They hail from all parts of the globe and have gone on to successful careers at employers such as Genzyme Corporation, Intel Corporation-Japan, Deloitte Consulting-Denmark and hundreds of other organizations.

Accolades for the Business School:  Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. Here is some recent recognition:

  • Sawyer Business School was selected to appear in the 2005 edition of the 20 Best Business Schools, published by the Princeton Review.
  • U.S. News and World Report lists the Suffolk Online MBA program as one of the best regionally and nationally accredited programs.
  • U.S. News and World Report lists Suffolk University in the top tier of "Best Universities-Master’s" in the North region, which counts 165 ranked institutions in six New England states, as well as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
  • The Association of International Educators recently selected Suffolk University as one of eight institutions of higher learning in the country to receive an award for its international programs.
