Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish, attracts over a million visitors every year, and it’s not hard to see why. Its diverse topography allows tourists to explore rainforests, beaches, and volcanoes, and engage in popular outdoor activities such as surfing, windsurfing, zip-lining, and snorkeling. San José, the capital and where more than 1/3 of the population resides, contains many historic sights, vibrant markets, galleries, and museums.
